- Regatta Rules
This regatta is conducted in accordance with the Rowing Tasmania School Rowing Rules.
Except as provided in those rules, the Rowing Tasmania Racing Code applies.
Note: The revised Rowing Rules, as agreed by the Rules Committee, will be distributed shortlty.
Rowing coordinators and coaches are responsible for ensuring they are familiar with and comply with all Regatta Rules, and should note the attachment to this bulletin, “Regatta and Field of Play Management”.
- Regatta Management
The Regatta Secretary is the Rowing Tasmania Schools Regatta Secretary, Karen Bain.
The Field of Play is managed by the Boat-Race Officials’ Association, Tasmania (BOAT).
The President of the Jury and Referee is Tina Maher, RA, RT, BOAT
- Regatta Times
Start time will be 8:00am. Timing of the last race will be based on entries, race timings and official breaks in the program.
- Draw
The plan is for the draw to be completed by COB Wednesday 22nd February and to be loaded to the Rowing Tasmania website, accessible through the Regatta Entries button. contacts will be emailed a copy of the draw in PDF and HTML format. It can be accessed at https://rowingmanager.com/tas/
- Results
Results will be live. There will be some delay as judges confirm results, but they will be uploaded as soon as possible during the regatta. Paper copies of race results will not be posted on the notice board on the Southern side of the Reeconian’s Centre.
- Facilities at Lake Barrington
Please ensure coaches, rowers and their families are briefed on arrangements at LBI. These are shown on the accompanying site map.
- Camping
Camping is permitted in the designated camping areas at LBIRC. Please ensure proper chocks are used for trailer/caravan wheels – abandoned rocks have caused significant damage to RT’s mower.
Any rowers camping at the lake should be proximate to, and under effective control of parent/guardian. There is to be no camping (including swags) on the Boat Park road or in the Boat Park.
- Curfew
There is a strict curfew of 10.00pm throughout the complex.
- Traffic Zones
- Boat Park - a boom gate is in operation to ensure that only boat trailers with tow vehicle are permitted into the boat park roadway. One additional support vehicle, per school, is permitted into the boat park. Please ensure trailers are parked within the parking spaces at the correct angle and that wheel chocks, not rocks are used;
- Disability parking is to the left on the road to the Judges Tower, immediately in front of the Ranger’s Lodge. Disability permits must be displayed in order to gain access.
- Boat Park
Bicycles and balls, running and wrestling are not permitted. This is a safety and boat protection issue. The boat park is out of bounds from dusk to dawn for the same reasons.
Schools rigging in the area adjacent to the ambulance access to the recovery pontoon (#1) must ensure that access is clear.
- Exclusion at the Finish
The judge’s tower and area immediately in front of the judges and adjacent to the finish is strictly out of bounds. This will be cordoned off with a safety barrier.
- Catering
- The Easy Oar Café provides a good range of food and cold drinks. The menu is available on the Rowing Tasmania Facebook page. The Café will be open from 7.00am;
- The Sam Le-Compte Coffee Shop opposite the Easy Oar Café provides hot drinks and light snacks.
- Kerbside Chips food van will also be available.
- First Aid
Medical Edge Australia will be in attendance and can be found near the Reeconian’s Centre. A medical practitioner will be available if required. Rowing Tasmania Boatrace Officials will manage rescue craft on the course.
- Helicopter medivac point
The level area at the 1750 mark is the helicopter medivac point. In the instance a medical evacuation is required from this area, it is to be cleared immediately.
- Rubbish
All waste is to be deposited in the Veolia Bins located adjacent to the Sam Le Compte shed. At the end of the day each school will be responsible for cleaning up their own rubbish and ensuring their area is ‘spotless’.
- Dogs
Please keep your dogs on a leash and pick up any land mines.
- Presentations
Presentation of Aggregate Trophies for this regatta will be at the Schools Championship Regatta.

A REMINDER – DO NOT ATTEND IF YOU ARE FEELING UNWELL, PRESENT WITH COVID-19 SYMPTOMS OR HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED TO ISOLATE AND YOUR ISOLATION PERIOD IS NOT COMPLETE.
Maintain good practice, wear a mask by choice, wash or sanitize hands, cover coughs and sneezes with your elbow, and where possible keep a reasonable distance from others.

Regatta and Field of Play Management
- Regatta Entries, Substitutions, Scratching’s and Late Entries
All substitutions and scratching are to be completed online, accompanied by a reason for the change/scratching. These must be done promptly and can be made up to 30 minutes prior to the race.
Late entries must be lodged online and acceptance of late entries is conditional a lane being available. Late entries will be accommodated in the order they are lodged. Link for scratching/changes/late entries: https://rowingmanager.com/?mainMenu
Failure to lodge crew changes in time will result in disqualification of the relevant crew.
- Coxswains Weigh-In
Coxswains of all open crews must weigh in. Weigh in is available from 6:45am – 7.00am on the morning of the regatta and not less than one hour before the first race in which they will cox. Weigh in will be conducted inside the Reeconian’s Centre – Athletes with coaches only. This weigh-in carries forward for both days of the regatta.
Coaches are urged to get their coxswains weighed in early and to be sure weights are carried.
- Bow numbers.
Bow numbers will be available for progressive collection from the Secretary’s Office one hour prior to each race. Athletes/Coaches collecting bow numbers must give the race number at the office window to facilitate issue. Please ensure numbers are returned on completion of the race, they are NOT to be kept and re-used. If the bow number is marked as not collected, the race starter will not wait for the boat. There is a $10 fee for un‑returned numbers.
- Scullers competence
Regulation 4.5 provides “All oars persons need to be competent. Any sculler or crew unable to competently manoeuvre their boat or complete a race should not be entered.”
If, on the day, a sculler cannot manage their boat they may be excluded from the race sent back to the pontoon.
- Management of Pontoons and Oars
Oars are not to be left on the pontoons. They should be carried down when the crew is boating, and be removed immediately they have returned from their event.
- Boat Compliance
Boatrace Officials will be checking that bow balls are properly attached with no protruding fixtures (e.g., screw threads); that shoes are independently tied to the foot stretcher, with a maximum heel movement of 7cm; and that hatch covers are properly fitted. Boats that do not comply will not be permitted on the water.
- LBI Navigation Rules
Please ensure coaches and rowers are aware of, and comply with course rules for both training and competition:
- Training
- MaST rules must be followed. Training outside of regatta hours a coach/safety boat must be within 500M, or life jackets must be worn.
- Y 7-10 Crews - there is no training at all from 30 Minutes prior to the first race of the program – that is, all boats must be off the water by 7.30am.
- Open Crews - are permitted to train during competition. They will be required to follow all BRO instructions and rules set out under point 4 in the Rowing Tasmania Traffic Rules. If these crews proceed beyond the Regatta Boundaries, the MaST rules must be followed.
- The counter clockwise training and competition lane rules are posted under the Sam Le Compte veranda.
The same anti-clockwise MAST navigation rules apply in the warmup area north of the 2000m start.
Note that there is no safety boat coverage beyond the 2000m start; - Rowers wishing to cross the course must seek the starter’s permission, noting that the starter will respond when not occupied with start management. At the 2000m start, crews must cross in the start (red buoy) zone;
- Start procedure for 1500m, 1000m and 500m events- Crews will be asked to enter their lanes ~200m behind the starting line. This will be done by umpires or a marshal. Crews will be asked to fill lanes, commencing from Lane 8, and so should organise themselves in descending number order off the eastern side of the course;
- Start procedure for 2000 events – Crews should proceed through the chute created by the line of buoys on the eastern side of the start area and proceed to, and turn around the red buoy north of the start area. Crews will be asked to fill lanes, commencing from Lane 1, and so should organise themselves in ascending number order in the western side marshalling area behind the start.
- Boats must be in the starters hand 5 minutes before the scheduled starting time of each race. This is a tight program, and officials cannot wait for stragglers.
- Beyond the finish, crews are to row around the white buoy near Davies Bay before returning to the ways;
- Rowers returning from the finish must not row through the finish line when races are finishing, but must hold their boats back until directed to proceed by the Judges.
- Start Procedure – Aligning
- When two minutes is called, and the amber flashing light is activated, control of the start is in the hands of the aligner.
- Coxswains should be silent. Crews should respond immediately to the directions of the aligner, directions are not to be relayed by the coxswain.
- When making fine adjustments to the line, the aligner will usually ask the bow rowers only, to respond.
- If the coxswain is concerned about alignment of the boat, they should raise a hand and direct re-alignment of the boat, ideally by backing so as to stay behind the start line.
- When crews are asked to check their boat, all crew members should square their blades with some back pressure and hold the square on to prevent the boat drifting.
It would be very helpful if coaches, as part of their training, practised aligning boat handling with their crews.
