Organisation Overview
Rowing Association of Western Australia Inc (“Rowing WA”) is the State Sporting Association responsible for the development, promotion and governance of the sport of rowing throughout Western Australia. Rowing WA is a not for profit organisation which is governed by the Board of Rowing WA. Rowing WA is one of seven State/Territory Associations, which make up the membership of the national body, Rowing Australia.


Rowing WA’s mission is to ensure the existence of quality participation opportunities, servicing and support of member clubs and delivery of quality pathways within the sport of Rowing. This is achieved through our strategic objectives:

Position Overview
The primary purpose of the Sport Development Manager role is to coordinate the growth and development of rowing in Western Australia. This will be achieved through the development of key stakeholder relationships and the implementation of a range of growth-related programs and projects.
The position will be required to design and implement club, coach, official and athlete development programs to improve the recruitment and retention pathways for each of these stakeholder groups.
The position requires a highly motivated, energetic and intelligent candidate with solid sports development experience and strong communication, relationship building and organisational skills. The ability to forge a close working relationship with Rowing WA affiliated bodies, staff, volunteers and other key stakeholders will be essential to the successful achievement of this position’s objectives.


Core Responsibilities
Promote the aims and objectives of Rowing WA within the rowing and greater Western Australian communities
Coordination of Rowing WA programs related to:
ï‚· Club development best practice
ï‚· Coach education and professional development
ï‚· Officials recruitment and retention
ï‚· Athlete pathways support
ï‚· School pathways development
ï‚· Other sport and membership growth projects
Operational support related to regatta and event management


SPORT DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
Key Duties
Club Development
ï‚· Develop and foster effective working relationships with Rowing WA clubs to enable the provision of resources and system guidance to enhance their capacity to operate successful programs;
ï‚· Assist in the establishment of new rowing clubs in Western Australia
ï‚· Manage cross-club and whole of sport growth and development initiatives
ï‚· Implement other club development initiatives as directed by the CEO
Coach Development
ï‚· Develop and coordinate the delivery of coach support services across Western Australia in line with ROWING WA’s strategic plan;
ï‚· Develop and manage a coach education and professional development strategy to ensure coaches have appropriate opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge and engage with our like-minded coaches on a regular basis;
ï‚· Identification of non-accredited coaches in formal and informal positions, and manage their inclusion into NCAS training programs;
ï‚· Implement other coach development initiatives as directed by the CEO
Officials Development
ï‚· Refine the Rowing WA Volunteer Management Plan (VMP) to specifically develop the attractiveness to become and remain a Boat Race Official;
ï‚· Implement a recruitment strategy to increase the number of active officials within the sport;
ï‚· Manage the retention, reward and recognition of the current group of Boat Race Officials in line the VMP;
ï‚· Develop an Officials pathway and corresponding training and education strategy to support the upskilling of officials ;
ï‚· Implement other coach development initiatives as directed by the CEO
Athlete Development
ï‚· Assist in the ongoing development and implementation of programs designed to facilitate progression along the athlete pathway;
ï‚· Develop a high level understanding of the needs of the rowing market segments e.g. school, masters, para, etc.;
ï‚· Effectively communicate the various opportunities to the specific market segments within the sport;
ï‚· Implement membership growth and development initiatives in conjunction with the CEO;
ï‚· Implement a Schools Rowing Strategy that:
o caters for the specific needs of rowers currently rowing in school programs to assist their transition into club programs post-school
o increases the number of non-traditional rowing schools in ROWING WA and club-based rowing programs including the All-Schools Championship;
ï‚· Implement other athlete development initiatives as directed by the CEO
Sport Development
ï‚· Represent ROWING WA (and/or the CEO) on relevant state and national committees and working groups as required;
ï‚· Develop and manage strategies for the increased inclusion of non-traditional rowing programs and non-traditional members (CaLD, indigenous, youth, etc);
ï‚· Assist in the ongoing review and development of appropriate sport-wide and club-specific policies to support the growth of the sport;
ï‚· Assist in the securing of Government grants to support the above initiatives;
ï‚· Implement other development initiatives in conjunction with the CEO


Any other duties within the Employee’s capabilities and that are reasonable to expect the Employee to undertake as directed by the CEO from time to time

Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria
ï‚· Demonstrated knowledge and experience of sport development pathways;
ï‚· Previous experience in developing, implementing and monitoring sport development programs for clubs, schools, athletes and coaches at all levels;
ï‚· Sports administration skills and experience including program development and managing and coordinating volunteers;
ï‚· Strong communication (written and verbal), negotiation and relationship building skills;
ï‚· Effective time management skills, ability to meet deadlines and prioritise tasks;
ï‚· Excellent computer skills and information technology literacy with a range of software applications and social media;
ï‚· Ability to work independently and part of a broader team;
ï‚· Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion;
ï‚· Open Drivers Licence


Desirable Criteria
ï‚· Experience working within a member-based association, particularly of a sporting nature;
ï‚· Knowledge and understanding of the sport of rowing
Term and Hours of work
The role is initially offered as a full time fixed term position for 12 months.
The nature of the position requires some out of hours and weekend work and regular travel to clubs and schools. Salary
Up to $60,000 per annum plus superannuation and other benefits
