Michael John (Mick) Knowles
25/01/1940 - 25/12/2015
Mick Knowles suffered a stroke at home on Thursday 24th Dec and passed away in the LGH Friday 25th December 2015.
Mick lived life to the full, achieved a remarkable lot during his life, his rowing career commenced in the early 1960’s culminating in him representing Tasmania in the Lightweight Four in Brisbane in 1963. This crew was comprised solely of members from the Ulverstone Rowing Club, other members of that crew were Brian “Tige” Carew, Jim Baade and Robbie Johnston with Greg Smith as the Coxswain, Greg and Tige passed away some years ago but 2015 has seen the passing of Jim, Robbie and now Mick.
Mick continued his involvement with rowing right up to his death, he was a past President, Patron, Life-member and coach at the Ulverstone Rowing club at the time. He had been involved with Lake Barrington from its inception, during the development stage and also following the opening of the course in 1984, assisting with the conduct of regattas and many years of maintenance of the venue. In later years assisting Mick Goodger and George Homer, particularly with any steel work, and in the reconstruction of the Start Platform and Launch Pontoon recently.
Mick continued his involvement with rowing in the Masters competitions around the State and at the Australian Masters Championships rowing with Merv Tippett for many years, including competing at World Masters Games in various countries. He also teamed up with many others from around the state, and Interstate members to make up crews. He had a good knowledge and understanding of the sport and was always prepared to discuss his views on this and any other topic at the time.
Mick's input, knowledge and friendship will be sadly missed by all in the rowing fraternity.
