Life Membership Marj Spurling

Rowing Tasmania Inc. Life Membership.

Mrs Marjorie (Marj) Spurling. OAM

12.01.1914 – 28.08.1995

On Friday the 25th of August 2017 at the Rowing Tasmania Annual General Meeting, Mr Robert Blake OAM addressed the members of the Tasmanian Rowing Community and spoke to the nomination of Marjorie Hilda Spurling OAM as a Life Member of Rowing Tasmania Inc.

Mr Blake’s speech highlighted the following points on Mrs Spurling involvement in the sport of rowing in Tasmania.

  • Rowed for the North Esk Rowing Club in 1936.
  • Foundation Member of the Reece High School Rowing Parents and Friends 1964/65.
  • Foundation Member of the Reeconian Rowing Club 1965.
  • Club delegate to the Northern Tasmanian Rowing Association.
  • Life Member of the Reeconian Rowing Club.
  • Out spoken advocate for the re-development of Women’s Rowing in the mid 70’s.
  • Tasmanian State Team Manager 1980/81.
  • Member of the Lake Barrington Development Committee.
  • Chair of the 1984 Kings Cup Franchise Committee, due to health reason Mrs   Spurling was not able to hold the Franchise portfolio for subsequent Australian Championships (1987 & 1990) and the 1990 World Championships, however strong advice was provided to these events.
  • Awarded an OAM further contribution to both the Community and within the sport of Rowing.

Mrs Spurling was both a committed and passionate supporter of the sport of Rowing and her nomination for a Life member of Rowing Tasmania was supported unanimously by those in attendance. Mrs Spurling name will be placed on the Life Member’s Honour Board in the Reeconian’s Centre at Lake Barrington.
