Annual Regatta, February 16, 17, 2019

Information for Intending Entrants

1              The Launceston and Henley Regatta Association invites entries from Schools and Clubs for the Annual Regatta, to be held on the Home Reach course on the Tamar River.

Entries close on February 8, 2019, and are to be submitted in the usual manner through the Rowing Tasmania facility.

Where schools enter multiple boats in any event, please append an ordering (especially No. 1) to facilitate forming Division 1 race fields which carry double point-scores towards aggregate trophies.

2              Races will all be over a 1000 metre distance, except for U13 events (all over 500 m), Open Four and Eight races (over 2000 m) and the new category of Sprint races for all comers (over 500 m).

Seat fees are $ 10 for all of the Regatta’s events.

3              Sprint races for eight-oared crews are included in the program, for which certificates only will be awarded to winners.  Given a river width restriction of at most six eights per race, in the event that entries dictate multiple races in either event, the Committee will decide the composition of each race.

4              Relevant tide times (approx.) : Saturday, High 10 am; Low 4.30 pm;  Sunday, High 10.30 am; Low 5 pm.

Given these times, racing will start at 8.30 am on Saturday, 9 am on Sunday.

This should permit a finish at approximately 1.30 pm on both days, still about three hours before low tide.

The attached schedule of events has indicative times that assume an average of two divisions per event, with races to be a minimum of five minutes spacing.  The ultimate set of race start times will obviously be dependent on the density of entries, so entering entities should not rely solely on the preliminary schedule.

Schools should note that the usual cautions apply to selecting crews for races in cases of equipment constraints.  It is unrealistic to expect a given boat could be used twice in the space of fewer than four races, given that a change-over on the launching ramp could be subject to delays.

5              Alpha-numeric lane numbers will be available for collection early in each day from a Regatta administration tent in Royal Park.  Each entering entity should designate a representative to collect and be responsible for the return of these.  A list of allocated numbers will be included with each set.

6              Entering entities are advised that there will be no security service in place on Saturday night, but the site will be floodlit as usual.

7              Schools are each requested to supply a licenced boat driver for both Saturday and Sunday racing.  Because of the large number of bodies required to ensure the smooth running of the Regatta, can schools please each supply an additional two people to assist in its conduct.

8              Coaches should ensure their crews are BEHIND the starting line at least FIVE MINUTES before the advertised start time of each race.

Crews leaving the ramp intending to proceed to the staring line, or to enter the North Esk River, must travel OFF the racing course on the Western side of the river.  Buoys will be placed to guide crew movements to ensure crews do not interfere with races.  Crews proceeding Northward from Royal Park along the course may be disqualified at the discretion of race officials.

9              Schools entering will note the two Phil Hughes Office Solutions Under 15 Quad Scull Division 1 races.  These should be seen as high prestige events and excellence in performance will be rewarded.  Winners will receive a Concept II ergometer. Because the Association is keen that these events be open to all entering entities, entries will be restricted to a maximum of two per school.  In case the number of schools entering causes the field size to exceed the course capacity (e.g. seven maximum, with a preference for six due to the incursion of the new pontoon at the Silo development on available safe river width), schools are asked to nominate their preferred (No. 1) crew to facilitate a ballot.  Any balloted-out crews will be able to row in Division 2 in the relevant event.

10           All Under 13 and Under 14 events have been scheduled for Saturday.

Certificates will be presented for all winning crews’ rowers, and trophies for all Division 1 race winners following Sunday’s racing.

All Division 1 Quad Scull race winners in the U13, U14 and U15 events will receive a medallion (presented immediately after their respective races) as well as the usual trophy and certificates.

The 2019 Home Reach Trophy will be for the winner of Boys School Eights on Sunday, Event 53.

The Roger Fowler Trophy Aggregate trophy will be presented for Under Age events, and the Graham and Elizabeth Quinn Trophy will be presented to the school amassing the most points in Open events.
