Ciona Wilson inducted into TIS Champions Club

Published Thu 12 Dec 2024

On behalf of our rowing community, Rowing Tasmania congratulates Ciona Wilson on her induction into the Tasmanian Institute of Sport Champions Club.

Ciona (MVP858) was one of three 2024 Champions Club inductees at the TIS Annual Breakfast on December 5.

Of the now 27-member Club, 10 of the athletes are recognised for their dedication to rowing.

Ciona started her rowing career as a student at Launceston Grammar and continued on with her senior rowing at Tamar Rowing Club and TIS  before being selected to join the National Training Centre as part of the Australian Rowing Team.

She has represented Tasmania at the Interstate Regatta - part of the ARC - on numerous occasions as a member of the state's Bicentennial Cup youth eight crew (twice), our senior women's crew for the Queen's Cup (three times), and twice as our single sculls entrant for the Nell Slatter Trophy.

The following is from the TIS website:

Joining the TIS in 2014, Wilson moved to the National Training Centre in Penrith in 2017 after winning the women’s eight title and the women’s coxless four title at the Australian Rowing Championships in composite Australian selection boats. Soon after Ciona made her Australian representative debut at World Cup 2 in Linz, Austria, in the five seat of the women’s eight. Then going onto compete at the Henley Royal Regatta the Australian Eight won the 2018 Remenham Challenge Cup.

At the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland the eight finished 5th before heading to the 2018 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The eight, with Ciona in the six seat won their heat before finishing third in the final, taking home the bronze medal.

In the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Ciona was part of the senior squad vying for a seat in one of the sweep boats. When the final crews were announced in 2021 after a delayed Olympics Games, Ciona was selected as a travelling reserve.

Rowing Tasmania also extends its congratulations to Sarah Hawe (MVP836) who was one the five finalists for the Seven Tasmania Tasmanian Athlete of the Year award, which was won by Olympic swimming champion Ariane Titmus.
