2020 Australian Masters Rowing Championships cancelled

Rowing Australia (RA) today confirmed that the 2020 Australian Masters Rowing Championships (AMRC 2020) has been cancelled due to the Federal Government announcement that non-essential mass gatherings of more than 500 are recommended not to proceed from Monday 16 March 2020 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cancellation of AMRC 2020 means that RA and Rowing Tasmania will not run the event that was scheduled to be held at Lake Barrington, in Tasmania, from 29 April to 2 May 2020.

The decision was made by the Rowing Australia Board, in consultation with both the Rowing Australia Masters Commission and also Rowing Tasmania, the latter as hosts of the event this year.

Rowing Australia CEO, Ian Robson said, “After discussions today with the RA Board, the RA Masters Commission and Rowing Tasmania, we sadly have to inform our Masters rowing community that we are unable to host this year’s Australian Masters Rowing Championships.

“The decision to cancel this year’s event, like the decision to cancel our National Championships, was made by the RA Board in response to the updated medical advice in relation to mass gatherings from the relevant government agencies and we continue to support the action being taken to help protect the health and well-being of the whole country.

“While we are disappointed to have to cancel this year’s event, the health, wellbeing and safety of all the rowing community – participants, volunteers, officials, staff and spectators – must always come first.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that the cancellation of Masters may cause. We look forward to welcoming the Masters rowing community to the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith, New South Wales in 2021.”

We encourage all our community to continue to closely monitor the situation around COVID-19 via the relevant State and Federal Health Authorities and the AIS website. The easiest way to protect yourself and others is to pay attention to good hand hygiene and good respiratory hygiene.
