2024 Kirby Cup - Saturday, 28th September

Join us for the exciting start of the 2024 rowing season at New Town Bay this Saturday!

Hosted by Buckingham Rowing Club, the Kirby Cup promises a fantastic day of racing, with events kicking off at 8am. Don’t miss out on the action as we launch into a new season of competition!

History

Kirby Cup was first contested in 1957. A trophy named after the Noel Kirby was
donated for a handicap long distance race contested in four oared boats. Early races
were held over a long distance course from Windermere Bay near the Cadbury’s
chocolate factory to the Buckingham Rowing Club in New Town Bay.
Due to the very exposed transit from Windermere Bay and the Bowen Bridge several
wind affected races were forced to be abandoned. This is particularly apparent during
the 1990’s as reflected in the results listed below. As a result the Kirby Cup course is
now contested over a buoyed course of approximately 7200 metres within the
confines of the stretch of the Derwent River between Tasman and Bowen Bridges.
